The museum was created on the initiative of the first deputy chairman of the Poltava regional organization of the Ukrainian Union of Veterans of Afghanistan "Yu. Tsomartov. Basically, the museum exhibit tells about the participation of Soviet soldiers in the Afghan war and other military conflicts.
Most of the exhibits were donated to the museum by Afghan soldiers. In front of the building of the Poltava Museum on a pedestal made of stone is an anti-aircraft installation ZSU-23-4 "Shilka", which has proven to be an effective and reliable weapon in Afghanistan.
Among the museum exhibits are plastic mines, small arms charges, original documents, personal belongings of officers and soldiers, as well as military clothing, letters, photographs, documents and personal belongings of veterans.
