Chapel on the site of a peasant camp

What? - Chapel on the site of a peasant camp

Description

In June 1909, celebrations on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava took place in Poltava. In 1909, the city's public proposed to commemorate the anniversary by building a memorial chapel. In the summer of 1910, the Poltava Provincial Zemstvo announced a competition for the design of the chapel. By March 1, 1911, 12 projects had been submitted and considered by the commission. The project of student I. Kalbus was accepted for implementation.

The chapel is a single-chamber two-light building, square in plan, with an entrance at the western front, located on a two-level stylobate with a staircase in front of the entrance. The walls of the chapel are lined with ceramic tiles with numerous ornamental stripes and inserts. The tongs are filled with highly artistic majolica panels: on the west forehead - "Savior with angels" (Christ sits on the throne, and at his feet angels with folded arms on his chest), on the north and south - "Six-winged seraphim" with intertwined wings. The eastern tongs are decorated with lush Ukrainian floral ornaments. The roof and roof of the dome are made of copper sheet. The dome is topped with a gilded cross cross on a crescent and a sphere.

The Chapel of the Holy Great Martyr Yuri the Victorious is an architectural monument of local significance. This chapel has only nine square meters, which makes it impossible to celebrate the Holy Liturgy.
