The stadium was opened in 1951 on the site of the former Poltava Hippodrome.
The main sports arena of the city has been repeatedly reconstructed. It received its modern name in 2008, when it was named after a native of Poltava, an ally of the French Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the idea of reviving the newest Olympic Games Оlexіi Butovskyі.
The capacity of the stadium is 25,000 seats, the size of the grass field: 104x68 m. The stadium is the home base of FC Vorskla.
The stadium hosted the finals of the Cup of Ukraine, the Super Cup of Ukraine on football, the Olympic flame of the 1980 Moscow Olympics (XXII Summer Olympic Games) was burning on the bowl of the stadium (then - "Kolos")
FC Vorskla has its own museum, opened at the stadium in 2013. On the ground floor of the stadium there is a branded store of the football club.
