Every year, in the last full week of September, the world celebrates the International Week of the Deaf, which ends on the last Sunday of September with the International Day of the Deaf Peole.
Museums belonging to the basic network of cultural institutions of the Poltava city territorial community actively involve people with disabilities in the cultural and artistic life of the city and embody the practices of a barrier-free society, which in wartime acquire even greater importance.
In order to help ensure accessibility for people with hearing impairments, remote access to a Ukrainian sign language interpreter has been launched at the Poltava Battlefield State Historical and Cultural Reserve with the support of the Polish company Migam and the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The service will work around the clock, 7 days a week.
From September 18 to 24, 2023, in cooperation with the Poltava Regional Organization of UCDP, municipal museums of the city held a number of meaningful thematic events for people with hearing impairment:
- Poltava Literary and Memorial Museum of V. Korolenko - thematic excursion "Volodymyr Korolenko in the family circle", introduction to the current exhibition "Floral Melodies of Summer" and traditional Korolenko tea;
- Poltava Art Museum (art gallery) named after M. Yaroshenko – lecture-conversation with sign language translation and master class on paper plastic;
- Poltava Literary and Memorial Museum of I. Kotliarevskyi - walking tour of the city "Historical downtown: events, personalities, architecture".
In general, about 50 people with hearing impairment were involved in the activities for the International Day of the Deaf People.
