To mark International Museum Day, representatives from the Tourism and Cultural Heritage Division of the Poltava City Council’s Department of Culture and Youth, along with researchers from the city’s municipal museums, took part in a study trip organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, to the Bilsk Historical and Cultural Reserve — one of Ukraine’s most unique historical and archaeological sites and the largest Early Iron Age settlement in Europe.
Participants had the opportunity to learn about the history of the Bilsk settlement, which many researchers identify with the legendary city of Gelon, described by Herodotus. The scale of the site remains impressive to this day: ancient ramparts, burial mounds, the remains of fortifications and picturesque landscapes create a special atmosphere of living history.
During the tour, the museum staff learnt more about the archaeological research at the reserve, unique finds from the Scythian period, and modern approaches to preserving the cultural heritage of the Poltava region.
Such study trips not only reveal new chapters in the history of our native land, but also promote professional exchange, the popularisation of Ukrainian culture, traditions and historical memory.
