On 23 September, International Sign Language Day, the Ivan Kotliarevskyi Literary and Memorial Museum in Poltava invited representatives of the Poltava branch of the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf to a cultural event entitled "The Language of Unity".
The event formed part of the museum’s work to create an accessible and barrier-free cultural space. As part of the "Inclusion with Kotliarevskyi" project, the museum has been organising events throughout the year for people with disabilities, creating opportunities for different groups of visitors to participate fully in cultural life.
A theatrical performance based on Ivan Kotliarevskyi’s "Eneida" was staged for the guests, and QR codes were introduced in the exhibition halls to help deaf visitors access information about the museum’s collection.
The event was interpreted into sign language by Svitlana Baklytska, a top-tier sign language interpreter from the Poltava Regional Organisation of the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf (UTOG).
The "Language of Unity" event marked another step by the museum towards making cultural heritage accessible to all. Such gatherings foster interaction between the museum and the deaf community, encourage their participation in cultural and educational events, and help create a space that is open to everyone.
