Poltava is a historical city

April 18 is celebrated all over the world as the International Day of Monuments and Landmarks. This day was started forty years ago in 1983 according to the decision of the Assembly of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments under UNESCO. Since 1999, in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine, the Day of Monuments of History and Culture has been celebrated in our country.
Recognizing the rich historical and cultural heritage of the city of Poltava, in which the original urban compositions, spatial organization schemes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, historical planning, valuable residential buildings have been preserved, at the same time, in order to protect the traditional nature of the historical environment of Poltava, according to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, to the List of Historical Settlements of Ukraine (time of foundation - 9th century).
As of today, Poltava has:
• 135 newly discovered objects of cultural heritage;
• 235 monuments of local significance;
• 32 monuments of national significance.
According to UNESCO's calculations, during the year of the Russian Federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, damage was caused to the cultural objects of our country in the amount of 2.6 billion dollars. The largest percentage - 30% of the total amount of damage - is in the neighboring Kharkiv region. In general, about 1,190 cultural objects/monuments were destroyed or damaged in Ukraine as a result of the war.
