Description

A monument to Swedes was erected in 1909, a few days before the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava. The obelisk was made in Sweden in the Vaneviks quarry. Emanuel Nobel, a well-known Swedish businessman who developed oil fields in the Caspian Sea, covered the construction, transportation, installation and purchase of the land. On both sides of the monument is an inscription in Swedish and Russian: «In memory of the Swedes who died here in 1709.It was erected by compatriots in 1909» (in Swedish - «Åt minne af svenskar, fallne här 1709 reste landsmän denna sten 1909»). Around the monument there is a fence of 12 cylindrical granite pedestals.

Monument to Swedes from compatriots is located near the village of Pobyvanka, Poltava region, where the left flank of the Swedish troops reached. According to legend, Swedish officers who died during the battle were buried at this place.
