In the small picturesque village of Khatky (now the village of Pokrovske, Shyshatskyi district, Poltava region) on the Psel River, in 1905-1919 Volodymyr Korolenko rested and worked with his family almost every summer.
The writer developed the project of the dacha himself, using the knowledge acquired during his studies at the St. Petersburg Institute of Technology. He also made his own drawings of a country house. The writer's wife, Yevdokiia Semenivna, took care of the construction. She bought building materials, hired craftsmen from the Orel province, supervised the progress of work. The writer's daughters, Sofia and Natalia, also helped. The construction of the country house was completed in 1905.
The country site turned into a real flowering oasis, where from early spring to late autumn there were lilacs and roses, marigolds and dahlias, carnations and lilies, lions and irises. Yevdokia Semenovna and her daughters loved to work in the garden, and the writer loved to plant trees.
Peasants from Khatky and surrounding villages freely came to Korolenko, talked to him, listened to his advice. He often helped with many friendly words of wisdom, and often, especially during the World War I, his help was material.
In Khatki Korolenko prepared the first part of the autobiographical story "History of my contemporary", wrote articles "Leo Tolstoi" (1908), "The Case of Glusker" (1908), "Even before the features of military justice" (1911), "On the betrayal of Mariampol" "(1916) and" War, Motherland and Humanity "(1917).
Not surprisingly, Korolenko's favorite vacation spot was not the prestigious resorts of Germany or France (although the writer had to visit there), but a Ukrainian house in the village. The last time Volodymyr Korolenko visited Khatky by road, together with his wife, was in late 1919.
The huts are the Ukrainian hinterland from which he saw the whole world. You can come there and now and make sure that all spiritual values are born at any time from purely earthly impressions and there is nothing unattainable for the artist of the word on earth. The dacha was handed over to the Kharkiv Art Institute for student practice and summer vacation of teachers. In 1960, a literary-memorial room-museum was even opened here. There were plans to equip an art gallery. However, no one repaired the room, and over time it turned into a ruin.
In 1996 it was decided to create a landscape reserve "Korolenko's dacha". And the head of the local farm "Agroecology" Hero of Ukraine S. Antonets undertook the reconstruction of the dacha and despite all obstacles took construction under his wing. On July 26, 2003, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the writer, the restored estate was inaugurated. Since then, it has been eagerly visited by fans of Korolenko's work and tourists from all over, because the places here are really wonderful. Absolutely everything is decided by the thirst for life, the vigilance of the eye, the sensitivity of the ear and the restlessness of the heart and, of course, love. And Korolenko had it all. So he was a happy man. His words: "Man was created for happiness, like a bird for flight" - are instructive for us.
Since 2018, the NGO "VeloPoltava" and the NGO "Amateur Theater" Malafeya" are organizing a thematic bike ride" Bike to the cottage Korolenko" recreating the bike path of Volodymyr Korolenko himself. From the writer's letters to relatives and friends it is known that from his house at 1, Malo-Sadova Street (now the Poltava Literary Memorial Museum of Volodymyr Korolenko), he was going to Kyiv railway station, where he was loading a bicycle. on the train, went to the station Gogolevo, and from there by bike, about 30 km, to the country.
In order for modern cyclists to be able to immerse themselves in "healing nirvana", the organizers annually develop an interesting educational program: this is a tour of the sights of the village. Velyki Sorochyntsi, and an interactive music program on the banks of the Psel River, and theatrical performances near Korolenko's country house.
