A monument at the site of the Moscow Army crossing the Vorskla River

What? - A monument at the site of the Moscow Army crossing the Vorskla River

Description

After negotiations with Turkey to maintain its neutrality, Peter I arrived in the army, which was located on the left bank of the Vorskla. After a military council held in the village of Kruty Bereg on June 16, 1709, a general battle was decided. This provided for the transition of the Russian army to the right bank of the Vorskla. On July 19, 12 km north of Poltava, the main forces of the Russian army crossed the river on three fords and set up camp near the village of Semenivka. The rest crossed on the night of June 20. Earthen fortifications were built to protect against a possible enemy attack. In 1909, a concrete obelisk topped with a bronze double-headed eagle (taken shortly after the 1917 revolution) was erected on a high hill on the right bank of the Vorskla River near the crossing. In 1959, according to the project of architects IL Shmulson and VA Pasechny, a new granite obelisk was installed instead of the old one. An inscription is made on a bronze plaque: "The place where the Russian army crossed to the right bank of the Vorskla on three fords on June 20, 1709."
