The main patron of the church was the Poltava merchant of the second guild L. Kolesnikov. Lev and his wife Anastasia left behind a bright memory, immortalized in the temples of Poltava. It is well known that a church in honor of the Holy Trinity on Hay Square was also built at their expense, in which these famous Poltava residents were buried. The pious family left large sums of money, according to the will, for the construction of the Macarius Church, which was built in 1903, two years after the benefactor's death. Consecrated in 1904 in honor of the Venerable Martyr Macarius Kanevskyш - Archimandrite of Ovruch, Pereyaslav miracle worker, and the chapel on the right - in the name of the prophet Elijah.
The church is brick, one-storey, cross in plan. The northern and southern arms and asps are faceted, with small volumes built into the corners between them. The central quadrangle is topped by a tent with a top on a light octagon. On the west side it is connected with a tent bell tower.
In 1937, the Church of St. Macarius was closed. In 1941 it resumed its activities. After the destruction of the Church of the Transfiguration in 1962, it became the cathedral church of the city and at the same time the chair of the Reverend Bishops of the Poltava Diocese.
The wave of temple destruction during the so-called Khrushchev thaw bypassed the Macarius Church - on the contrary, after the demolition of the Transfiguration Cathedral in 1962, it received the status of a cathedral. Several restorations have not changed its original appearance. Neither the elements nor human injustice could harm him.
In 1966-1967 and 1986-1987, the interior was restored.
The interior preserves paintings of the early twentieth century, the icon of Our Lady of Gorbaniv (1786).
