The Museum of the History of the Battle of Poltava, opened in 1909, became the first among the military-historical museums of Ukraine. The museum tells of a fateful battle between the armies of Tsar Peter I of Moscow and King Charles XII of Sweden, which took place on June 27, 1709.
In 1981, the museum and a complex of monuments related to the history of the Battle of Poltava was declared the State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Field of the Battle of Poltava", with a total area of over 700 hectares. The museum's stock collection consists of more than 6,000 exhibits, including cold steel and firearms, cannons, military ammunition, paintings and more. Among the nine exhibition halls, the most interesting are the Cossack Hall and the diorama of the Battle of Poltava (Hall 7). The latter, measuring 17.5 x 4.5 meters, is one of the first masterpieces of the battle genre of the famous military studio of artists named after M. Grekov. Given the leading role of the museum in the study of Ukrainian history of the XIV-XVIII centuries in the context of European history, in 2009 the complex of monuments "Poltava Battlefield" was included in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukrainian History of National Importance.
