The prominent writer and humanist was buried on December 28, 1921 in the Old Town Cemetery. But in connection with the closure of the latter in 1936, the ashes of Volodymyr Korolenko were moved to the territory of the Poltava City Garden (now the park of culture and recreation "Victory"). His wife Evdokia Semenivna was buried nearby in 1940. In the same year, work began on the installation of a monument on the grave of the writer.
During World War II, details of the unfinished building were looted.
In 1962, a tombstone made of granite monolith 2 m 15 cm high was installed on the grave. It is a block of red granite, on the front plane of which a bas-relief portrait of the writer is placed in a bronze oval. Under the bronze bas-relief is an image of Korolenko's autograph.
The writer's grave is located next to the estate where Volodymyr Korolenko lived for the last twenty years. Poltava City Garden was a favorite place for walks of the whole Korolenko family.
