Grave of Ivan Kotlyarevskyi

What? - Grave of Ivan Kotlyarevsky

Description

The classic of new Ukrainian literature died in 1838 at the age of 69. According to the poet's will, he was buried in the city cemetery under a sprawling poplar on both sides of the Kobeliatsky tract. In 1893, the Poltava Provincial Zemstvo Assembly allocated 1,000 rubles for the construction of a new monument. At the same time, donations began to be collected. The monument was opened in 1898. The monument is a granite obelisk made of black marble on a figured pedestal. On the front side there is a bas-relief image of Ivan Kotliarevskyi's face in a laurel wreath (cast by students of the Zemstvo craft school).

Below is a poem by Taras Shevchenko:
"You will rule, father, as long as people live,
as long as the sun shines from the sky, you will not be forgotten.

The obelisk was crowned with a cross, which in 1938 was replaced by a quadrangular cone-shaped block, and a bas-relief was moved to the joint. The monument and the grave were surrounded by a metal fence, which was removed in 1967. In 1969, granite approaches were laid. Restoration and polishing of granite planes was carried out, gilding of inscriptions was restored.
