By the 100th anniversary of the writer's birth, it was decided to build a monument for voluntary contributions. But in connection with the World War I, the authorities ordered to stop fundraising.
According to the author's estimates, the cost of the monument was 25-27 thousand rubles. By November 1, 1913, donations worth 29,258 rubles and 25 kopecks had been collected for the construction of the monument to Gogol.
The project of the monument to Mykola Gogol was created by Leonid Pozen gave it to the city for free and in 1915. It was a bronze sculpture of the writer. For almost two decades, she lay in one of the warehouses. Only in 1934, in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the writer's birth, a monument was erected. The glorious son of Poltava land found a worthy place on one of the best boulevards of Poltava. The height of the monument is 3.5 m. The bronze sculpture of the writer is set on a high pedestal, in his right hand - a pencil, in his left - a notebook, on his shoulder a lion cloak. The monument is located near the theater named after Gogol.
To the 150th anniversary of his birth, a reconstruction was carried out: the architectural forms, the pedestal were improved and a bronze plaque with the inscription “M. V. Gogol. 1809-1852».
