House of the Malorossiiskyi Post Office

What? - House of the Malorossiiskyi Post Office

Description

The project of the building of the Malorossiiskyi Post Office is one of the first buildings of the ensemble of the Round Square - its construction was completed in 1809. Originally, the house consisted of a main two-storey brick building with a six-columned portico and two one-storey outbuildings, maintained in stylistic classic forms.

The provincial post office did not work in Poltava for long - in 1822 it was transferred to Chernihiv. From December 13, 1822, the building housed the First Poltava Men's Gymnasium, then a county school and a shelter for the children of impoverished nobles. On December 6, 1841, the House for the Education of Poor Nobles was abolished, and its pupils were transferred to a noble boarding school at the gymnasium, which was located in the outbuilding. The county school was located initially in the central building, and later was also moved to the outbuilding. The first men's gymnasium existed in this building until 1861. Since 1866, the building has housed the Mariinska Women's School of the 1st category, which in 1870 was transformed into a 7-grade women's gymnasium. The gymnasium was closed after the final establishment of Soviet power in 1919.

In 1943 the house burned down.Restored in the postwar years.

After gaining Ukrainian independence, the house was transferred to the city school of arts. Since 2005 it is the Small Academy of Arts named after R.Kyrychenko.
