Description

   The monument to the outstanding Poltava architect Leo Vaingort was opened on November 28, 2021, next to the administrative building on the 1 Zygina str. Previously, this building housed the executive committee, where Leo Vaingort  worked as the city's chief architect in 1939-1970.

   Vaingort's sculpture is made of bronze, and the white column on which he rests is made of reinforced concrete. The height of the figure of the architect is 1,84 m (6' ft). He is depicted in a jacket, with a tie and ballpoint pens in his pocket. The height of the column is 3,17 m (10.4 ft). The entire composition is located on a small pedestal and reproduces one of architect's famous photographs at the White Rotunda. Sculptors are D. Korshunov and V. Golub. Architects are  A. Aroian and V. Shulyk.

Information:

   Leo Vaingort was born on November 27, 1912 in Warsaw. His parents took him to Poltava when he was a baby.

   He graduated from school in Poltava, and then a technical college. He received his higher education at the Kharkiv Engineering and Construction Institute. After graduating from university, he worked for some time on the construction of the Moscow Metro. In 1938, at the age of 26, he was appointed to the position of chief architect of the city of Poltava.

   Vaingort is a co-author of many monuments of the city and many scientific works on urban planning and architecture of Poltava. With his active participation in the post-war period, the city center was restored, urban planning measures were carried out to create a clear planning structure, and the historical appearance of the Round Square was recreated. In 1954, Vaingort restored the White Rotunda. Achieved the construction of a new building for the Poltava Academic Music and Drama Theater named after Mykola Gogol (1958). In the 1960s, Vaingort oversaw the construction of the road-railway bridge across the Vorskla, the House of Culture of the Cotton Spinning Plant, and the layout of the Poltava City Park. With the great assistance of Leo Vaingort, the Exaltation of the Cross Monastery was restored, and the bell tower of the Holy Assumption Cathedral was preserved.

   For 10 years, Leo Vaingort was an associate professor of the Department of Architectural Design at the Poltava Engineering and Construction Institute (now -National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” ). Author and first director (since 1981) of the Mykola Gogol National Museum-Reserve in the village of Gogolevo, Poltava region.

   After retirement, since 1986, he worked as a senior researcher at the Poltava Regional History Museum named after V. Krychevskyi, to the restoration of which he put a lot of effort.

   The author of many research, historical and architectural works.

   The architect died on April 18, 1994 in Poltava.
