Sklifosovsky's enormous, extremely strenuous work required some relaxation. And he found her in Ukraine, directly in Poltava region, where he began to visit constantly with his family in the summer after 1871. Here, in the then suburban village of Yakivtsi near Poltava, was the estate of his second wife, Sofia Alexandrovna, whom Mykola Vasyliovych married after being widowed. The Yakivtsi estate, which until the tragic death of Borys Sklifosovsky's son was still called Otrada, occupied an area of 600 tithes at the beginning of the 20th century. The economy in the full sense of the word was exemplary. Eight-field crop rotation was used here, and field areas were sown with alfalfa. Cattle deserved attention in the farm. Horses were kept and bred Ardennes and Danish, cattle - Simmental, pigs - Yorkshire. Hens were also of high breeds - pale cochineals, hudans, lagshans. The estate had an industrial garden with numerous single-variety plantations, a small vineyard with varieties of Madeleine, Isabella, Shasla and others, a mulberry tree plantation, an industrial garden, an apiary with 15 hives, an exemplary hop garden with a wire hop garter. Oaks, maples, birches, pines, spruces, acacias, and mulberries were planted on sloping hills and ravines. This picturesque corner was called "Poltava Switzerland" for its exceptional beauty and well-groomedness.

Near the house Sklifosovsky himself planted an orchard, he took care of it. Apple trees, pears, apricots, peaches, walnuts and mulberries grew here. Mykola Vasyliovych liked to do experiments with fruits. He achieved great success in crossing two different varieties of apples and pears. As a result, received extremely juicy and fragrant varieties.

The estate was located on the high right bank of the river Vorskla near Poltava. Mykola Vasyliovych broke the vineyard on the slope of the shore, tied and pruned the vine himself. After many years of work, he received the first harvest of grapes, which proved the possibility of ripening grapes in Poltava province and also a good variety. He was also one of the first hop growers in our country.
