Description

On December 25, a monument to the prominent poet and philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda was unveiled in Poltava, in a park near the Small Academy of Arts named after Raisa Kyrychenko. The sculpture was made in Kharkiv and was created by Katib Safar-oglu Mamedov and Serhiy Chechelnytsky. The height of the monument is 3.5 meters. The philosopher is walking barefoot on the ground holding a staff with a nightingale on it in his right hand, a reference to the fable “The Nightingale, the Lark and the Thrush.” The poet's left hand holds a book clutched to his chest. Skovoroda is dressed in a spacious caftan, similar to a church cassock, with a flute behind his belt and boots behind his back. On the pedestal are inscriptions of Hryhorii Skovoroda's name in Ukrainian and Latin.
