Description

Hryhorii Miasoiedov, a famous artist, initiator of the Society of Mobile Art Exhibitions, academician, full member of the Academy of Arts, was born on April 19, 1834 in the village of Pankovo - now Novoderevenkivskyi district, Orel region of Russia. His father was a poor landowner, he came from a noble family. He taught his son to paint. Hryhorii lost his mother early. He had an older brother and a younger sister.
In 1889, thanks to the help of the Poltava doctor Olexandr Volkenstein, Miasoiedov bought a manor with a garden, a park and a small pond in the suburb of Poltava Pavlenky. It was here that Hryhorii realized his long-time dream of planting a large orchard. With the help of fruit breeder Lev Symyrenko, Miasoiedov planted 190 varieties of apple trees on his plot. The artist laid out his own observations on the pages of the illustrated manual "How to plant a fruit garden", and also united gardeners in a mutual aid society.
In his estate in Pavlenky, the artist lived for more than 20 years together with his second wife Tetiana Vasylieva and his son from a previous marriage, the future famous artist Ivan. Not far from the house, among old oaks and willows near a long, winding, somewhat neglected pond, was a favorite resting place of Hryhorii Miasoiedov, where he sometimes worked. And in the mezzanine, similar to a landlord's house, a workshop was equipped, which later became a real art gallery, where the works of the artist and his fellow wanderers were kept. Hryhorii Miasoiedov recorded the beauty of his estate in a small painting "Spring", which depicts a young couple leisurely strolling through a blossoming spring garden.
Hryhorii Miasoedov loved music, knew how to play the violin and viola. He gathered and became the leader of a small musical ensemble that met every Saturday at his home.

Artists Mykola Yaroshenko, Volodymyr Menk, Mykola Ge, Ivan Parkhomenko, Vasyl Volkov, sculptor Leonid Pozen, and surgeon Mykola Sklifosovskyi used to visit the estate, which was called "Miasoiedov's Dacha". The artist also had friendly relations with the famous writer Volodymyr Korolenko.
In Poltava, Miasoiedov took an active part in its social and cultural life. He could often be found in the halls of the Noble Assembly, the Provincial Zemstvo or the House of Provincial Attendants.

Hryhorii Miasoiedov was concerned about the issue of art education, especially in provincial cities. Therefore, he was involved in the creation of art schools in Kharkiv, Odesa, Kyiv. In 1893, Miasoiedov opened his own school of drawing and painting in Poltava.
In 1900, Poltava got its own theater premises - the Educational Building named after Mykola Gogol. At that time, Hryhorii Miasoiedov was grieving the death of his common-law wife and the mother of his son Ivan Xenia Ivanova from tuberculosis, so when the Poltava City Duma turned to Hryhorii Miasoiedov with a proposal to create a theater curtain for the newly built theater, the artist agreed to distract himself from the grief and illnesses that befell him. Work on the curtain lasted more than three years, and upon completion, the author donated it to the city without taking any fee. The plot of the large canvas (6x12m) depicts the outskirts of Poltava with a view of the Exaltation of the Cross Monastery. On the side of the road sits a kobzar, in which you can easily recognize Taras Shevchenko singing a duma to a traveler, very similar to Mykola Gogol. Today, this theatrical curtain is exhibited in the halls of the Poltava Local History Museum named after Vasyl Krychevsky.
In 1903, a grand historical event took place in Poltava - the opening of a monument to the classic of new Ukrainian literature, Ivan Kotliarevskyi, which gathered almost the entire flower of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Several thousand people came to the solemn opening of the monument in Poltava. As part of the first festive events, the art exhibition "In memory of I.P.    Many famous works of art by Hryhorii Miasoiedov were created in Poltava. Several portraits that are exhibited in the Poltava Art Museum (Art Gallery) named after Mykola Yaroshenko belong to this period of his work. In 1904, Miasoiedov painted the painting "Student. On the way to knowledge", which was special for the artist, in particular, the fact that the model was Tetiana Vasylieva - the artist and companion of the last years of Miasoiedov's life. One of her paintings "Baydar Gate" is also kept in the Poltava Art Museum.
Hryhorii Myasoedov died on December 17, 1911. Buried according to his will on the territory of the manor, which he loved so much.
