Kryvokhatky - is an old historical area, the former settlement of monastery’s peasants, located in the valley of the Zadykhalnyi (Breathless) ravine.
The path to the Holy Cross Exaltation monastery’s hill begins with this picturesque ravine, which was mentioned by very famous Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, public and political figure Taras Shevchenko in his story “Twins”. Arrived in Poltava for the first time in summer 1843, then 1845 – 1847 and in 1859 he wrote some works: “Heretic”, “Blind”, the poems “Don’t envy to rich man”, “Don’t merry a rich woman”. He created a few drawings, portraits for his album “Picturesque Ukraine”. In Poltava he sketched the homestead of I. Kotliarevskyi and the monastery of Exaltation of the Cross.
The serpentine road that leads to the monastery from Poltava has s double name: “Small military-Georgian road” or “Teshchin yazyk” (“Mother – in – law’s tongue”). The name of the road comes from the winding descent and steepness of the slope.
The most famous inhabitant of this settlement was the legendary Poltava poet, singer Marusia Churai. Author of a number of well-known songs: “Oh, do not go, Hryts”, “Light rose Cossacks”, “Blow winds” and many others which became a real hymns for Ukrainian Cossacks. The flowering of creativity Poltavka accounted for the heroic age of the hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.
